The holiday season is here and for us that means a lot of baking is happening. We have been baking like this together as a family for years. It all began where most family baking sessions happen, with cookies.
Those frosted and decorated Christmas cookies just called our names. It has grown to be so much more than just cookies though. We now spend our holiday season baking cookies, cake, pie and bread. The majority of our holiday baking is homemade bread and we love it!
If you tend to keep your more “difficult” baking projects kid-free, you may be surprised to learn that making bread with kids can provide many benefits for them (and you!), it can be a ton of fun and it will be easier for you too! Here are just some of the benefits that making bread with kids can provide:
Benefits to Adults:
- Time Saved - Unless you are baking with toddlers, making bread with kids really can save you time and work! Why not delegate?
- Family bonding - Time spent with kids is so important. Kids need to bond with their parents and grandparents. It’s good for everyone.
- Making memories - Few things in life are more important than memories made with those you love. The time spent in the kitchen with little ones is great for making memories together.
Benefits to Kids:
- First and foremost, the benefits to kids include all of those same benefits that adults receive by making bread with kids.
- Organization and Planning Skill Building - Successfully following a recipe means you need to have an organization system in place. Making bread with kids allows them to improve on their organization skills
- Learning how to follow directions. Following recipes are all about following directions. Learning how to follow directions appropriately is a life skill that all kids need to learn.
- Math Skills - Yes, baking bread can help your child boost their math skills. Measuring out ingredients, counting supplies, adding mixtures together, setting timers, all of these things will help your child strengthen their math skills.
- Science Skills. Baking bread with kids is also a great way to introduce them to science! Watching yeast rise and witnessing what happens when ingredients are mixed together is a fun and useful way to show kids how science helps our daily lives.
- Confidence building. If you could do something to help your child or grandchild increase their confidence? I know I would! Believe it or not, inviting your child to bake bread with you will give them an instant confidence boost. Once the baking project is complete, their confidence will soar even higher. Knowing that they can create something and seeing others enjoy the thing that they have created can boost their self confidence greatly.
