Want to Hear a Monster Story?

Posted by

Who else loves a good scary tale or monster story? I am a fan of scary stories around the campfire, cheesy scary movies, Fantasy Movies including little known mythical movies, box-office hits that everyone jumps on board with, and oh my goodness I love a good 80s mythical movie (Did anyone else watch Labyrinth and Willow on a loop?) and I love love love a good, funky urban legend. My husband thinks it’s weird (he hates scary stuff and doesn’t watch anything that isn’t funny), he does however, have a penchant for believing in Bigfoot and other creatures like it, so I feel like we are on the same page. Okay, I get that those things may not be on the same page at all, but it’s my argument for my love of cheesy scary films and awesome mythical stories.

My son seems to have developed my love for the fantasy/mythical type movies, while my daughter shares my love of monster movies. We also really love to watch movies as a family. When we have movie days we tend to add a theme to them and we build activities around them as well (yeah, we are one of those families). One day it will be scary movies, popcorn and game night. The next it will be fantasy movies and art. Yet another night will be comedy and candy.

Maybe my personal love for these mythical movies and stories is partially what leads me to encourage my children’s artsy and creative side. I love it when they want to tell (or write) stories, or draw pictures, or craft some unique artwork. I love when they stay in the lines and I think I love it even more when they make lots of funky creatures that I can’t even decipher what they are. I often give my kids blank sheets of paper to create their drawings, paintings or other artwork. Sometimes I even give them a package of clay to create a personalized masterpiece. Sometimes though, I give them craft kits and painting sets. That’s why I love these fun paint kits we offer here at Sassafrass.

Here is a little run down of my favorites:

paint your own wizard - kids will paint this wizard in all sorts of wizardly ways! Wi-zards are among my favorite storyline characters. Some of my favorite movies include Wizard of Oz, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and the Harry Potter movies, so of course I have to highlight this one first. Growing up, my daughter’s favorite TV show was Wizards of Waverly Place, so even as a 13 year old, she has a love for wizards.

paint your own witch - eye of newt and toe of frog are cooked up in this witch’s cauldron! C’mon, every good story has a witch in it, don’t you think? What is your favorite witch story or movie?

paint your own vampire - fortunately, this vampire has already eaten dinner, but he’s ready for painting! Okay, I’m going to admit something to you right here, right now. The Lost Boys is one of my top 5 all time favorite movies. Seriously, it made me love all things vampires. I am an adult now so some of the more recent vampire hits weren’t my thing, but I still enjoy vampire stuff. My daughter is a teenager, but still loves the Hotel Transylvania movies. I mean, cartoon vampires are the best, aren’t they?

Paint your own monster - not all monsters are green! kids will love painting him red, purple and blue, too! This monster looks like Frankenstein, the classic monster, the classic monster movie. Who hasn’t heard “It’s Alive!” and wanted to hop right into watching monster movies?

I know I’ve gone on and on about my love for these stories, but it’s for a reason. I genuinely think that fantasy and mythical stories are great for imagination and creativity. Imagination and creativity, in my opinion are incredibly important for childhood and brain development. These paint kits are lots of fun for the kids and the keep their creativity flourishing. The figures can be painted however the kids choose to paint them. They can choose whatever color combination they decide, they can add designs, or they can even mixing paint in an effort to create unique colors. Tell me you didn’t mix paint colors during arts and crafts time when you were young? I did. All. The. Time.

If you want to get your kids imaginations running again, you should grab some for them too and right now is a great time to do it. We are offering 10% off of PYO Mythical creatures when you use promo code 10MONSTER. Expires March 9th, 2018!
