The Importance of Letting Your Kids Decorate
Posted by C. Carey on Jun 29th 2018
How old are your kids? Have you made the switch yet to letting them decorate their own rooms? I recently read an article wherein there was a leading child psychologist interviewed and spoke about about how parents should let children decorate their own room. That psychologist also spoke about how doing so can help to create the psychological space that every person desperately needs in order to have success in developing their self-esteem. I fully agree with this train of thought, and honestly I love letting my kids display their personality. It’s fun! What kid wants to be stuck in a room that is decorated solely by their parents? There is no personality in that and they will constantly feel like a guest in their own home. You don’t want your child to feel like this, right?
Even if you tend to be more in control of the decor and the organization of your children’s rooms, you can let them start small. Even something as small as their hamper or a wastebasket or one wall decor piece (or one of countless other decor pieces) can make a huge difference in their confidence and in how comfortable they feel in their space.
As much as we may like to think so, or as much as we may want our Instagram followers to believe it, parenting is not about how organized we can be or how we think our homes need to look like the pages of a magazine, that’s not reality. Our kids need to have a creative outlet and sometimes, something as simple as choosing a decor piece can do that for them. Who cares if it is not something you would choose? This is their space and they deserve to be comfortable in it and excited by the way that it looks and they also deserve the self-confidence boost that comes from having a say in the decor.
Okay, so now that we have chatted about the importance of letting your kids display their own personality and decorative creativity, how about we take a look around at all of the fun decorations we have here at Sassafrass (and there are a lot of them!).
