Kids in the Kitchen

Posted by

If you are a busy person like I am (and I know that you are), it can be hard to fit family time into day to day life. Yes, you probably schedule family time in like many of us do, but wouldn’t it just be nice to spend time with your kids while they are young instead of waiting around until the schedule allows for it? I used to literally watch my calendar for that block of time that I had set aside specifically for spending time with the kids and that made me sad. I did not want my kids to be just another part of my busy schedule. Thankfully, I found a way around this. I have now scheduled just about all of my home activities around having my children there. That’s right. When I clean, they join in with their chores, when I am lazy and decide to watch TV, we watch a family show together and when I cook they come in the kitchen and cook with me!

Cooking with my kids has because one of our favorite activities to do together. They are learning and enjoying time with mom, while I get to spend some much needed time with them and watching them figure out new things all the time is simply wonderful. I’m not sure why I didn’t think of this before!

As much as I love the activity of cooking with my kids though, they were hesitant at first. They started the process thinking of it as just another chore and it took me a while to convince them that it was actually a lot of fun! I started by making sure they were able to view it as fun and to do this, I got them their own kitchen gear. They each got their own silicone kitchen tools (mixers, spoons, tongs, etc). In case you didn’t know it, they sell all of these in fun bright colors now and the kids loved choosing their own colors. Second, I got them fun kitchen wear to help make them feel life little chefs and also to protect their clothes from the cooking messes because yes, these messes happen often with kids in the kitchen. Besides, how absolutely adorable do kids look in little chef’s aprons? So cute! Look at these fun ones that we have here and tell me you don’t want to see your adorable little ones all dressed up and working in the kitchen!

Here's another reason to get your kids cooking with you.  Did you know that a recent survey showed that almost 30% of adults don’t know how to cook? Not only that, but it is worth noting that this particular survey was actually done way back in 2011 so I am confident that this number is still rising. One of the things I love the most about my kids cooking with me is knowing that they will be perfectly capable of cooking for themselves when they reach adulthood. Not only does cooking with your children allow you precious together time, but it allows your child an advantage at life that apparently, not everyone gets. I don’t know about you, but I am definitely seeing this one as a win-win for parents and kids!
