Baking Kit Fun with the Kids

Posted by

What was the first thing you ever baked? Do you remember? I very vividly remember baking a white cake when I was 10 years old.  For the record, my mother was not the queen of baking so we did straight from the box kind of baking in my mother’s house. I remember the smell of that cake once I pulled it out of the oven (it smelled amazing btw) and I also remember next melting frosting all over the cake because no-one told me that I was supposed to wait for the cake to cool off before frosting it (whoops). After that first baking experience I couldn’t wait to do it again, but this time I went to my grandma’s house. She taught me to make cakes and cookies and cobblers from scratch and I have never looked back!

So how about you? Do you do a lot of baking? Have you taught your children to bake?

Baking is also a great wintertime activity! When it’s too cold to send the kids outside to play, how do they stay busy? At my house we choose this time to do a lot of baking together. We do this for several reasons.

  • We all loved baked goodies. That’s right. You probably don’t even need more than this reason. Who doesn’t loved a good baked treat?
  • Baking is fun. I have forever enjoyed the simple pleasures that come with baking. To spend time mixing together the ingredients and watching it turn into something delicious and amazing is just so much fun.
  • Baking is learning. I like for my kids to always keep learning. Believe it or not, baking is actually a great way to learn math skills! You are constantly needing to measure, count and time things. This is a fun, non-structured way of learning. Honestly, the kids rarely realize that what they are doing is a lesson of sorts.
  • Baking is a necessary skill. Kids are going to grow up to become adults, right? In order to be a successful adult you need to be able to take care of yourself. This includes cooking, baking, etc. I say teach them now while they are young so they never have to struggle to learn as adults.

All of that being said, I do realize that kids are kids and they may not be quite as interested in baking as I am. I think that’s all going to change though because I am planning to order them some of our Sassafras kids Baking Kits. These cute kits can be ordered at once or you can sign up to receive a new kit monthly. Each of the kits include all of the necessary items to have a themed baking session.
